Why Count Sentences?

Writing assignments often set sentence requirements ("a paragraph of 5-7 sentences"), language tests score essays partly on sentence variety, and editors watch average sentence length as a readability signal. Instead of counting by hand - and losing count halfway - paste your text and get the exact number instantly, along with words, characters, and paragraphs.

Average Sentence Length and Readability

The average-words-per-sentence figure is the quiet star of this tool. Clear online writing usually averages 15-20 words per sentence; academic writing runs longer; marketing copy shorter. If your average is over 25, readers are working too hard - try splitting long sentences. If it's under 10, the text may feel choppy. There's no single right number, but knowing yours lets you adjust deliberately.

How Sentences Are Detected

The counter splits text at periods, question marks, and exclamation points, while ignoring decimals (3.14 stays one piece) and common abbreviations (Dr., Mr., e.g.). No automatic counter is perfect on unusual formatting, but for normal prose it matches hand-counting.
