How to Use This GPA Calculator

  1. Enter each course name (optional), pick your letter grade, and enter the credit hours (usually 1-4 per course).
  2. Click + Add Course for more rows - add every course in your semester.
  3. Your GPA appears automatically, weighted correctly by credit hours.

How GPA Is Calculated

Each letter grade has a point value on the 4.0 scale. Multiply the points by the course's credit hours to get quality points, add up all quality points, and divide by total credit hours:

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course gives 12 quality points; a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course gives 12. Total = 24 quality points ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA. This weighting is why one bad grade in a heavy-credit course hurts more than in a 1-credit lab.

Semester vs Cumulative GPA

This calculator gives you the GPA for whatever courses you enter. For a semester GPA, enter just this semester's courses. For a cumulative GPA, enter all courses from all semesters - or enter each semester's GPA as a "course" with that semester's total credits as the hours, which gives the same weighted result.
