Use the first box for the everyday question - "what will I actually pay?" Enter the original price and the percent off, and you instantly see the amount saved and the final sale price. Use the second box in reverse: enter the original and sale prices to find what percentage discount you are getting - handy for checking whether a "sale" is really a good deal.
Sale price = Original x (1 - Percent/100). Amount saved = Original x Percent/100. For example, a $120 jacket at 30% off saves $36 and costs $84. Working backwards, if something dropped from $120 to $84, that is (120-84)/120 x 100 = 30% off.
When stores offer "20% off, plus an extra 10% at checkout," the discounts do not simply add to 30%. They apply one after another: 20% off $100 is $80, then 10% off $80 is $72 - a total of 28% off, not 30%. To calculate stacked deals here, run the first discount, then use its result as the price for the second.
