Find out exactly what you need to score on your final exam to hit your target grade.
Your course grade is a weighted mix: everything you've done so far counts for (100% − final's weight), and the final exam counts for the rest. The formula solves for the missing piece:
Needed score = (Desired − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight
Example: your current grade is 78%, you want to finish with 85%, and the final is worth 30% of the course. Needed = (85 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 102.3% — mathematically out of reach, so you'd adjust your target. Aim for 82% instead and you need 91.3% on the final: hard, but possible.
Under 60% needed: you're safe - normal preparation holds your grade. 60-90%: achievable with focused studying. 90-100%: possible but demanding - prioritize this exam. Over 100%: the target is out of reach through the final alone; ask about extra credit, or protect the best grade you can still reach. Knowing the number early beats finding out after the exam.
Run the calculation for two targets: the grade you want and the minimum you'd accept. The gap between the two needed-scores tells you your safety margin - and how much pressure is actually on this one exam. Students consistently overestimate how much a final can move their grade; a 20%-weight final can shift a 78% course grade by at most 4.4 points in either direction.
