How Weighted Grades Work

Most courses don't treat every assignment equally: homework might be 30% of your grade while the midterm alone is 25%. A weighted grade multiplies each score by its weight before averaging, so heavier components pull your grade harder. The formula: Grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight).

Example: homework 92% (worth 30%), quizzes 78% (worth 20%), midterm 85% (worth 25%). Your grade so far = (92×30 + 78×20 + 85×25) ÷ 75 = 85.6% - solidly in B territory, with 25% of the course still to play for.

Letter Grade Reference

The common US scale: A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = below 60%. Schools with plus/minus grading slice each band into thirds (B+ = 87-89, B = 83-86, B- = 80-82). Your syllabus overrides any general table, so always check the official cutoffs when a grade is borderline.

Planning the Rest of the Semester

If your entered weights total less than 100%, the remainder is still winnable. That's where this calculator pairs with our Final Grade Calculator - it takes your current grade from here and tells you exactly what you need on the final to reach your target. Together they turn "how am I doing?" into an actual plan.
